An Interview with a native...

In the interview I'm discussing with my lovely beste Freundin, Clara, about Vergangenheitsbewältigung (coming to terms with the past) as a third generation, native German speaker, and how Germany's confrontation with the past has shaped her life.

About The Project

Although one of the primary outcomes of the Transnational Holocaust Memory Conference held on the 26-27th January 2015 was a travelling exhibition on the German Experience of coming to terms with the Holocaust, this blog focuses on the rehearsals and a dramatization by the Theatre Company Blah Blah Blah and also Escape Contemporary Youth Theatre, who devised a play called 'Falling to our knees'.

The Transnational Holocaust Memory Conference included an exhibition which encouraged visitors to ask questions about "how we remember the past.What do we remember, how do we remember, and why do we remember?" The exhibition focuses on Germany after 1945, but we hope that visitors were able to make the exhibition relevant to the ways their own societies are facing up to other pasts - and presents - that may still be unresolved. The production of 'Falling to our knees' was based upon some of the information found within the exhibition panels, such as Willy Brandt's 'kniefall'.

The exhibition was developed by the German Department at the University of Leeds, the South African Holocaust & Genocide Foundation, the UK National Holocaust Centre and Museum, Nottingham Trent University, and the University of the Free State, South Africa, working as partners.
